Pelosi: Student Loan Bill Will Make College Education More Affordable and More Accessible

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on H.R. 5, the College Student Relief Act of 2007, which cuts the interest rates on student loans and passed on the House floor by a vote of 356 to 71, with all Democrats and 124 Republicans voting for the bill:

"Today's bipartisan vote to cut the interest rate in half on federally subsidized student loans over the next five years will help make a college education more affordable and more accessible for our next generation of leaders and innovators. At a time when college tuition continues to skyrocket, this crucial legislation will help remove some of the barriers to a higher education.

"A college education is the best investment our nation's young people can make in themselves, and the best investment our nation can make in its future. Democrats will continue to work to ensure that every young person that is determined to earn a higher education is able to do so. Our young people should be driven by their dreams, not weighed down by debt."

i. Black History Month Event with BLSA – going to work with BLSA to have a local politician or politically active member of the black community discuss the upcoming election
ii. Speaker Panel: Legal Jobs in Politics combined with a Networking Event with Pittsburgh Liberals – Career Services said they are interested in working on this event that would be held in the evening after spring break; this will provide an excellent opportunity to find the perfect job that combines both the law and politics
iii. 2006 Candidates – interested in having a speaker or two, such as Bob Casey or law students running for office in May
b. Debate with the Republicans/Federalists – still waiting to fear from Republicans to settle on a date, which should be in mid-February; potential debate topic would be domestic spying; debate would be structured with someone from each group giving an opening statement (background information on the issue), open discussion between group members moderated by Professor Baylis, ending with a concluding statement by someone of each side (summary of the debate)
c. Social Events
i. State of the Union Watch – Tuesday, January 31st @ 8 pm; could watch speech in open-area on the ground floor; need to ask if alcohol allowed (will probably need it if Bush is talking about taking away our civil liberties); Gina Mosley volunteered to help with event
ii. Alternative Bar Review – OUTLaw wants to host activity once a month; first one for the semester will be at the end of February; might couple activity with a fundraiser for law school candidate
d. Fundraiser – bumper stickers or t-shirts – interest in buying t-shirts; potential quotes for the shirt: “Politics is like driving; D to go forward, R to reverse” or “’Cause who’s ever heard of a good piece of elephant?”; still interested in other suggestions too

Lecture on Torture by Professor Jules Lobel @ the Courtroom from 12:00-1:30 pm

Professor Lobel is a vice president of the Center for Constitutional Rights and, in terms of international litigation and law, he has been called "one of the most significant lawyers of his generation." He helped the Nicarraguan government develop its first democratic constitution and has sued every presidential administration since Reagan's. Lobel has published several articles and books including "Success Without Victory" which advocates bringing suits to advance a cause even if it is lost in court. Most recently he represented Guantanamo detainees and sued the military contractors involved in the Abu Ghraib scandal on behalf of Iraqi citizens. Please note that pizza will be served at the end of the talk.

To be an active member, one must attend two meetings or two events throughout the semester.

Tom discussed the planned events for the semester:
- panel discussion of the present and future state of the Democratic party in Pennsylvania
- visit by Senate candidate Bob Casey Jr.

Positions open in the organization
Business Manager was elected by voice vote: Mary Gibson
Webmaster was appointed: Caleb Wallace
Social Chair was discussed

Communications
The blog will be used for most communications
Members expressed interest in receiving e-mails about events so both media will be used

Registration Drive
In an attempt to make this an annual event, Laura volunteered to be in charge of a registration drive for new voters to take place in the law school. It will take place in early October.

This is the official "welcome message," so welcome to Pitt Law Democrats on Blogger. Our alternate message board on Yahoo was taken over by spammers and viruses so we're going to move away from that - and for good reason I think.
